Charles enlisted in the 2nd Regiment of Illinois Volunteers as a Private for a period of three years. He was 20 years old when he enrolled on 2 May 1848 in Chicago, Illinois and was mustered in on 4 May 1848. He was assigned to Lt. A. Fullerton's Detachment at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. The Detachment was supposed to prepare facilities for occupancy by the headquarters staff of the 2nd Regiment; however, the war ended and Charles was mustered out on 27 June 1848, after serving only 57 days. Due to the brevity of his service, his name was never entered on the rolls of the regimental roster.

Charles enlisted in Osceola, IA on 4 Jan 1864 for a period of 3 years. He was 36 years old when he was mustered in as a Private in Des Moines, IA and assigned to Co. D, 39th Iowa Inf. He was present for duty Jan-Feb and left sick in Mar at a contraband camp in Pulaski, TN. Charles was placed in charge of the work hands and wagon teams of horses/mules. The contraband camp was moved to Nashville, TN in Nov 1864 and took part in the pivotal Battle of Nashville on 15-16 Dec 1864. Charles was reassigned to Co. G, 7th Iowa Inf., in Jun 1865 to Louisville, KY and mustered out with the unit on 12 Jul 1865.
