Son of James Henry Miller and Mahala Ann Vassar. His siblings were; Andrew J. b. 2/23/1872 & d. 3/6/1872, Oney F. b. 1/20/1883 & d. 9/8/1883, David Laffiett, Benjamin Riley, John Alexander, Daniel Abraham, William "Willie" Edward, Dora Belle Carnagua, Mary Rebecca Marlow , Fannie Ellen Garner and Ilah Stokes.

Sam received his training at Camp Funsten in Kansas and Camp Kerney in California. Private Miller was assigned to Co. L 109th Infantry and landed in France the middle of July 1918. He was killed by German machine-gun fire on September 7, 1918. [Note: There are different spellings of his name as well as different death dates due to the circumstances. The spelling of his name and the date of death used on this memorial was taken from military records].
