Civil War Union Army Brevet Brigadier General. After the start of the war he offered his services to the Union, and was commissioned Captain of Company D, 8th Indiana Infantry Volunteer Infantry on April, 25 1861 at Indianapolis, Indiana. Promoted to Major on May 10, 1862, he served some time on the staff of Brigadier General Eugene A. Carr as his Acting Ordinance Officer. On September 19, 1863 he was transferred to the 117th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and was commissioned the unit's Colonel and commander. He led his regiment in the field until he was honorably mustered out on February 25, 1864. In October of that year he rejoined the Union war effort, being commissioned as Colonel and commander of the 140th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, a regiment he helped recruit and raise. He would led the unit through the end of the war, and was honorably mustered out on July 11, 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious services in the field". After the war he was appointed to the diplomatic post of United States Consul to Saint Thomas in the West Indies, where he served from 1870 to 1875. He was then appointed as Assistant United States Postmaster General, an office he served in from 1876 to 1881.
