He enlisted in the Confederate Army at age 19 on 14 May 1861. He joined the 15th Virginia Infantry, Company B - the Virginia Life Guards. In December of 1861 he was admitted to Seminary Hospital in Williamsburg with typhoid fever. He was furloughed and absent until detailed as a clerk in the Adjutant's office until November of 1862. He transfered to Parker's Battery in September of 1863. He was a First Sergeant when he was captured at Saylor's Creek on 6 April 1865. He was confined at Point Lookout until he took the Oath of Alligiance in June of 1865. He returned to Richmond and entered the insurance business, marrying Eliza Sanger Manson.
