Obituary - Joseph J. Falk, respected resident of this community for upwards of 70 years died Tuesday afternoon at the home of a daughter, Mrs. George Young of Prairie Twp. Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. G. A. Schimmel, at Grace Lutheran Church in Strasburg Thursday afternoon. Interment was at Stewardson. Mr. Falk was a son of John H. and Anna [Franke] Falk. He was born Aug.3, 1848 in Mecklenberg, Germany. When about 10 years of age he, with his parents, emigrated to America, locating in Chicago. Here he was confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Immanuel's Church on Apr. 1, 1860, by the sainted pastor, I. A. W. Mueller, receiving as his memory verse the words of Matt. 8:26. A few years later his parents came to Prairie Twp., settling on a farm near Herborn, southwest of Strasburg. On Jun. 21, 1874, he was united in holy wedlock to Miss Emma Volkman of Stewardson. They affiliated with the Lutheran Church. For a while they lived in Stewardson, where Mr. Falk engaged in a business enterprise. Later they moved to Herborn, where he farmed and was interested in the hay business. This union was blessed with six children. Two girls died in infancy and one boy, Will, died at the age of 18. On Sep. 4, 1889, the Lord took his helpmate which was a severe blow to him and his family of small children. When his youngest daughter, Alvena, was married to A. B. Kull, he made his home with them for a while. On Apr. 18, 1906, he was married to Mrs. Fannie Blue of Strasburg. They began housekeeping at Strasburg and have resided here ever since. The departed became a communicant member of Grace Church at Strasburg in 1927. He attended divine services as long as his health permitted. He became very feeble the last five months of his life and at times he was cared for at the homes of his daughters. He peacefully fell asleep at the age of 89 years, 3 months, and 2 days. Besides his widow, he leaves to mourn the following children: Louise Young and Frank Falk of Herborn, and Alvena Kull of Shelbyville; two sons-in-law, George Young and A. B. Kull; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Eliza Falk; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Dorothea Rozine of Stewardson and other relatives and friends.
