In 1850 Alexander was living with his parents on the 1850 Forsyth County, Georgia census.

Alexander's grandfather Isaac Freeland (Sr.) served under General George Washington in the Continental Army, including the Winter of 1777 at Valley Forge. Isaac (Sr.) also served in the War of 1812.

Alexander's father Isaac Freeland (Jr.) was drinking with a group of men in Forsyth County, Georgia when a man from South Carolina rode by for which he cursed at the man. The next morning the South Carolinian was found dead. Isaac (Jr) was hung April 15, 1859 at the age of 52 for murder though the evidence was sketchy. He left a wife and 15 children.
