FAMOUS EDUCATOR AND FRIEND TO FRIEDRICH FROEBEL, INVENTOR OF KINDERGARTEN
Bertha Marie von Buelow was born March 5, 1810 in Brunswick, Germany to Baron Heinrich von Buelow and Baroness Henriette von Wartensleben. She was 20 years old when she married 41 year old Wilhelm Freiherr von Marenholtz, a widower with five children ranging in age from 2 to 10 years. Together they had a son, Alfred, who died at the age of 21.
The Baroness added her maiden name to her last name after being confused with another woman using her name to promote a business. She was then very well known as the 'Tante Baronin'.
By the time she died in 1893 at the age of 83, she was a famous educator known for her work promoting Friedrich Froebel's 'kindergarten'. A two-volume biography of her life by her niece, Baroness Bertha von Buelow-Wendhausen, tells of her life as Baroness von Marenholtz-Buelow at Gross Schwuelper, court at Braunsweig, and speaking throughout Europe about Froebel's 'cause.' Her grave is in the children's section of the cemetery in Dresden. Froebel's descendents today give credit to Baroness von Marenholtz-Buelow for her untiring efforts towards the acceptance of kindergartens in Europe and the United States.
