Richard Newman "Dick" Johnson was the son of William Johnson, Jr. and Phebe Farley of Barren and Edmonson Counties in Kentucky. He was born March 3, 1825 in Warren County, Kentucky He married Rachel Manley on April 17, 1851 in Bowling Green, Warren County, Kentucky. After they were married they moved to McKinney, Collin County, Texas in 1852 before moving to the Spring Creek area of Parker County, Texas about 1858. They were the parents of three sons and nine daughters. The first three children were born in Collin County and the other nine in Parker County. Richard was a farmer and a Baptist preacher. His wife Rachel Manley Johnson died on April 30, 1878 at the age of 46 years, 3 months and 14 days leaving Richard with a large family to care for. He died 25 years later on November 21, 1903 at their home on Spring Creek, Parker County, Texas.

OBITUARY
This is a clipping from an unknown newspaper. It was written by commitee members of Richard Newman Johnson's church on Dec 26, 1903. It is not correct in every detail. It probably appeared in one of the Dallas and/or Mesquite, Texas newspapers and a Weatherford, Texas newspaper. It reads as follows:
Bro. R. N. Johnson departed this life November 21, 1903, on Spring Creek at the old home. Bro. Johnson was born March the 3rd, 1825, in Warren county, Kentucky, being at the time of his death 78 years, 7 months and 28 days. He professed Christ and joined the Missionary Baptist church at 12 years of age in 1836, and in the spring of 1851 was married to Miss Rachel Manly; in 1853 they came to Texas and stopped at McKinney, Collin county, and in 1857 they moved to Parker county where they resided until death. He was sick three or four weeks, and everything was done for him that kind hands and loving hearts could do. He bore his pain and suffering with patience and Christian fortitude. He joined the Pleasant Point Baptist church March 25, 1882, and has lived a faithful and consistent Christian life. The church extends to the bereaved children and loved ones its heartfelt sympathy in their bereavement.

Richard Newman Johnson's daughter, Georgia Ann, who married Marion Potter of Dallas County, Texas, was the paternal grandmother of VirJean Potter Bozarth.
