Susan Hersperger was a daughter of Catherine (née Remsberg) and Heinrich "Henry" Hersperger, born in 1806 in Jefferson, Frederick County, Maryland

Susan Hersperger and John Dare were married on 6 October 1824 in Frederick County. The two met when John Dare was passing through Jefferson, on his way to Harper's Ferry (then in Virginia, now in West Virginia). The couple had five children; three of whom lived to maturity.
