A Civil War veteran, he was drafted by Pennsylvania at the stated age of twenty-one in York County October 24, 1862, mustered into federal service at York November 7 as a private with Co. B, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in York.
He married Margaret Stegner and fathered Laura May (b. 12/04/69 - married Levi Warner Gerbick), Lilly Jane (b. 01/16/72, d. 09/17/72), Lida or Lydia Belle (b. 09/08/73 - married Solomon Elwood Derry), Lucian "Lucy" (b. 04/23/76 - married Cosmas D. Strausbaugh), Clayton (b. 07/15/77), Titus (b. 10/19/80), Emma Jane (b. 08/03/82 - married James Franklin Rohrbaugh), Robert (b. 03/01/85), and John Allen (b. 06/08/87). In 1890, he was living in Codorus Township where he died at his home from "chronic diffuse meningo-encephalitis."
