Oren was living in Hunt, TX when he entered the service and was a member of Headquarters Company, 7th Medical Battalion, 7th Infantry Division.

He was listed as Missing in Action near Untack, North Korea while attempting to find a lost ambulance on November 24, 1950 and was presumed dead on December 31, 1953.

For his leadership and valor, Lieutenant Colonel Atchley was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Medical Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
