Private, Company L, 18th Pennsylvania. Served as Second Lieutenant, Company K, 175th Pennsylvania Infantry from November 10, 1862 to August 7, 1863. At war's end, the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry and the 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry were consolidated to form the 3rd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry. Edwin was mustered out with Company F, 3rd PA Provisional Cavalry on October 31, 1865.

Lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania before the war. Lived in Honeybrook, Pennsylvania, after the war. Filed for a pension on August 4, 1892, application number 1,124,496, certificate 1,025,290. Wife Mary A. Helms filed for a widow's pension on July 1, 1908, application number 899,419, certificate 663,704.
