Throughout his preteen and teenage years, JD was active in the local Erwin Baptist Church and outdoor scouting and local sport activities. When JD graduated from high school he joined the US Navy Armed Forces in March 1951 and served as an Aviation Ordnance man until March 1955. JD served honorably for four years while being stationed in multiple US Naval bases around North America. His last years of service was stationed on the USS Bennington at Quonset Point, Rhode Island.
