SHORT ILLNESS
Hold Services Wednesday
For Galva Resident.
Fred N. Hurlbutt, 73, a resident of
Galva since he retired from farming in
1919, died suddenly late Monday afternoon
at his home at 416 Northwest
Sixth avenue, Galva. He had been ill
only two weeks following a heart attack.
Funeral rites were conducted Wednesday
afternoon at Johnsons Chapel
here with Rev. J. Edward Nelson,
pastor of Messiah Lutheran church, officiating.
During the song service, two solos,
"What a Friend We Have In Jesus"
and "God Is Love," were sung by Mrs.
D. J. Best with Mrs. Verna Bowman
Anderson as the accompanist.
Interment was made in Galva cemetery
and acting as pallbearers were
Thomas A. Monier, Glenn Swank, R.
M. Everett, Howard Hathaway, Richard
Lapan and Bert W. Johnson.
Born On Homestead.
Fred N. Hurlbutt was born January
2, 1873, the son of Frederick A. and
Caroline Osgood Hurlbutt, his birth
taking place at the homestead property
of his oarents in Galva township, about
five miles northwest of Galva.
Mr. Hurlbutt grew up on that farm,
receiving his education in the Naslund
school in that district, and helping his
father with th"e farm work.
His -marriage to Miss Winnie Hamilton,
of Cambridge, took place December
11, 1895, at the home of the bride's
parents near Cambridge, with the late
Rev. John D. Calhoun performing the
ceremony. The couple observed their
golden wedding anniversary of that
marriage last year.
After the wedding, Mr. and Mrs.
Hurlbutt began housekeeping on a farm
in Burns township, adjoining the homestead
land.
They made their home here until late
In December of 1919 when they retired
and purchased the present home in
Galva.
Three Children Born.
Three children were born to them:
Raymond H. Hurlbutt, who died of
pneumonia at the age of 19 while a student
at Knox college in Galesburg, Miss
Hazel L. Hurlbutt, who teaches at
Waukegan, but who has been with her
parents during the summer months,
and Robert H. Hurlbutt, of Davenport.
Also surviving besides the widow and
two children are two grandchildren,
Alice Ann and Mary Ellen Hurlbutt,
of Davenport; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie
Peugh and Mrs. Jennie Penney, of
Galva, and a brother, Frank L. Hurlbutt,
who is now on the Hurlbutt homestead
farm.
Preceding him in death besides the
parents and son were four brothers,
Edgar L. Hurlbutt, Elmer A. Hurlbutt,
Lee H. Hurlbutt and Charles H.
Hurlbutt, and one sister, Mrs. Zelda
Bull.
Before his retirement, Mr. Hurlbutt
was active in the affairs of Burns
township, serving for 12 years as a
member of the board of directors of the
school and was also Burns township
road commissioner for a time.
At the time of his death Mr. Hurl
butt Was vice president of the Galva
Homestead & Loan association and
was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge
for over 34 years.
Although not associated in membership
with any local church, he attended
the Congregational church here.
