Elmer A. Hurlbutt, aged 59 years, formerly a well known resident of this community, succumbed suddenly Monday at his home in Rochester, Minnesota, following a week's illness, a dispatch to relatives in this city the day of this death stated.
The deceased was born May 14, 1863 on the old Hurlbutt homestead, north of Galva, being the son of the late Frederick and Caroline Osgood Hurlbutt. Until five years ago he was engaged in farming near Bishop Hill with his brother, Ed Hurlbutt, going at that time to Rochester, Minnesota, where he purchased a hotel. Mr. Hurlbutt was united in marriage January 1, 1893, with Miss Effie Michaels, who survives him. To this union were born four children, Earl, Marion, Edna and Vannice. He was a member of the Baptist church in this city. At the time he moved to Rochester he was a deacon in the church here.
Besides his wife and children he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. John Peugh and Mrs. Jennie Penney, of this city, and Mrs. Zelda Hurlbutt, of Pasadena, California, and five brothers, Edgar, Charles and Frank, who reside north of Galva; and Lee and Fred, of this city.
Mrs. Jennie Penney and Lee and Fred Hurlbutt left this city Sunday evening for Rochester, but arrived there a short time after their brother passed away. They attended the funeral services, which were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the First Baptist church in Rochester.
