John Simms was one of the early pioneers of Coweta County, Georgia. Shortly after the Treaty of Indian Springs (1825) opened West Georgia to white settlement, John and his brother Britton arrived in the region from Hancock County, Georgia. John Simms was married to (1) Mary Connell on December 24, 1809 and (2) Comfort Mattox Grace on September 16, 1816. Simms was the son of Robert Simms III and Sarah Dickinson.
