Samuel Wadsworth entered the Civil War on January 10, 1863, at California, Washington County, PA, as a Private in Company "H", 103 Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers. Not much is known of his service during the war. His Company was captured at Plymouth, North Carolina on April 20, 1864 and he was held a prisoner in Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He was paroled at N. E. Ferry, North Carolina on March 1, 1865; reported at College Green Barracks March 16, 1865; and admitted to Camp Parole Hospital, Annapolis, Maryland on March 18, 1865. While there, he died on April 14, 1865, as a result of chronic diarrhea, which he contracted while in prison. Before entering the service he was a coal miner, and had been helping to support his parents, Benjamin & Mary Ann (Hull) Wadsworth.
