Confectioner. Known as the "Father of Peeps," he invented Hot Tamales and created the process to mass produce Peeps candy. After returning from serving in the U.S. Navy (World War II), Ira worked at the candy company Just Born established in the 1920s by his father Sam Born. His plans were only temporary, but he fell in love with the business and stayed for decades. He became known as the "Father Of Peeps" after Just Born acquired another candy company named Rodda Candy Company. The Rodda Candy Company made a shaped marshmallow candy that was produced by hand in a time-consuming process. Born figured out a way to shape the marshmallows with a machine which lead to the mass production technique that made it possible for millions of Peeps to be made daily. Born also invented the Hot Tamales candy by reworking the company's recipe for Mike and Ike candy into a red spicy cinnamon candy. Born began a tenure as president of Just Born candy and served in that capacity for over thirty years. His hometown of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania has designated the first day of the Easter season as Bob Born Day.
