Donald L. Thompson, of Salem, passed away Saturday morning, September 18, 1999, in Community Hospital, Roanoke. Born October 10, 1925, at Chattaroy, W. Va. He was the son of the late Everette M. and Pearl B. Thompson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Vance, Lawrence, Richard, and Rudy.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Evelyn (Wyrick) Thompson; son, Dr. Donald W. and Carla Thompson, of Birmingham, Ala.; daughter, Donna Marie and Paul Evans of Radford; son Brian Thompson of Salem; sisters, Fay T. Moore of Buckeye, W. Va., Lucille Blesi of Emory, Vivian Billings of Abingdon, Carolyn and Francis Fleenor of Damascus; brother, Neil Thompson of Damascus; grandsons, Ryan and Jacob Thompson of Birmingham, Ala.; several nieces and nephews; and special "granddog," Chessie.

He served in the United States Navy in the Pacific during WW II, in a PT boat unit. He was a graduate of Emory and Henry College, and received a Masters Degree from the University of Virginia. He was retired from Roanoke County Schools with 26 years of service as an elementary Principal at Ogden, Starkey, and Catawba schools, and as a visiting teacher. He also served 12 years as a teacher at Wallace High School in Washington County and Marion High School in Smith County before coming to Roanoke County. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Roanoke County Employees Federal Credit Union for 26 years, and a member of Central United Methodist Church in Salem.

The family would like to thank friends, relatives, and neighbors for their loving support. Sincere appreciation is extended to the ICU and PCU staffs of Roanoke Memorial and Community Hospitals, with special thanks to Dr. Charles Hefner and Dr. Kirk Hippensteel, and the Carilion Home Healthcare staff.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, September 20, 1999, at 2:30 p.m. at the John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Salem. Dr. William Davis, pastor of Central United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, at the funeral home.
