Hannah was the fifth of six children of Azariah Mathews, a farmer of Ewing and Hopewell Twps., Mercer Co., and Frances 'Fanny' Sebold Mathews.

She was probably born at her maternal grandparents' house in Kingwood Twp., Hunterdon Co. She may have been named after her maternal grandmother, Hannah Drake Sebold.

She married Richard Hart Burroughs. They had four children: Frances E. in 1856, Jerusha V. in 1858, Jeremiah Mathews 'Jeremy' in 1861, and Anna Mariah in 1864. Only Jeremy survived to adulthood.

Hannah was a housewife. She lived in Hopewell Twp. most of her adult life. She died of valvular disease of the heart after a 2-year illness.

She had three grandchildren and 145 additional descendants as of early 2008.
