Viola Gowdy, 85, a lifelong resident of Quay and Roosevelt counties, passed away on February 17, 2008, in Lubbock, Texas.
Viola, born August 20, 1922, was the daughter of Will and Emma Johnson of Nara Visa, New Mexico. Will homesteaded their place, coming from Kansas in the early 1900's.
Viola attended and graduated from Nara Visa Schools. She married Wink Gowdy in 1946, making their home in the Porter and San Jon communities. She was an active member of San Jon First Baptist Church for many years. She loved the Lord, and was saved as a young woman through the witness of her grandmother. She served as the library aide for the San Jon Municipal Schools for 31 years. She was a very loving and caring Mother and Grandmother.
She is survived by two daughters, Rhonda Payne of Portales, New Mexico and Trudy Harper of Grand Junction, Colorado; two sons, Mickey Gowdy of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Randy Gowdy of Amarillo, Texas; one brother, Ward Johnson of Hesperia, California; ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Services will be Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at 10:00 A.M. at the San Jon First Baptist Church with Rev. Walter Huber officiating. Burial will follow in the San Jon Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Dunn Funeral Home, Tucumcari, New Mexico, 575-461-3815.
