Conscientious Objector. Frederick Wilkinson was the Secretary of the Streatham branch of the No-Conscription Fellowship. He was conscripted to join the army in 1916 but failed to join his regiment. As an Absolutist he also refused to serve the war effort in a non-combative role and was imprisoned. He died of influenza in Maidstone Jail aged 30. Administration of his estate, valued at £113 8s, was granted to his widow, Alice.
Frederick was the son of Joseph Wilkinson, a Building Surveyor originally from Nottinghamshire, and his wife Jane nee Langler. He had three older siblings, Joseph, Ernest and Cecilia, and the family lived at 32 Thurlow Hill, West Dulwich, South London. In the 1911 census his widowed mother and his sister were still living at 32 Thurlow Hill, while Frederick was a boarder at The Villas, Thornley, County Durham, with the family of miner Frederick Cook. His occupation is recorded as an elementary school master, employed by the county council. He married Alice Brudenell in 1914 in County Durham.
