Brought by his parents from GA to FL 1833/1835 they settled in Columbia Co., Florida. He served in the FL Vol. during the Indian Wars; Capt. Jackson BIRD & Capt. Aaron JERNIGAN's Co. He fought at Ft.Myers and was wounded in the abdomen. He was a devout Methodist. He built the first cabin in Arcadia in 1856, on the site where Mrs. Mary SMITH lived in 1926. This was the original WILLIAMS homestead. In his pension papers he stated he had resided there since 1859. Eugene L. WILLIAMS (1886/1981) said he remembered his father saying the family returned to Baker Co. for a while (1860). According to Matthew HERNDON, when he came to the area of present day Arcadia there were but two families, Thomas WILLIAMS and Jim WALDRON. The nearest P.O. was Joshua Creek, about four miles distant. R.C. HENDRY, postmaster, sponsored an application for a P.O. with "Arcadia" as the name of the community. The application was granted and David Sampson WILLIAMS s/o Thomas was appointed the first postmaster in 1884. Probate and Deeds in Arcadia Court House, DeSoto Co., FL.
