Louisiana State Rep. James P. Smith
James Peyton Smith of Farmerville, Louisiana, passed away Monday, August 14, 2006 at St. Francis –North Hospital, Monroe, following a lengthy illness. He was born in the Conway Community of Union Parish on September 6, 1925.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Reverend and former State Representative J. Duff and Sallie Jane Turner Smith; brothers Milas, John Allen and J.D. Smith; sisters Estelle Hollis, Emma Brantley, Mary Lou Hicks and Sarah Parsons; one grandson , Nathaniel A. Smith, and one great-grandson, David Nolan Mashaw.
Mr. Smith leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife of more than 60 years, Foye Nolan Smith, of Farmerville. three sons James Bradley and wife Nikki of Farmerville; Danny Allen and wife Ann, of Marion; Max Graham and wife, JoAnne, of West Monroe; two daughters Roslyn A Smith and husband Stan, of Farmerville; and Jayne Smith-Green and husband, Bobby, of Farmerville. Grandchildren are James Bradley Smith, Jr. and wife Michelle, of West Monroe; Phillip Matthew Smith and wife, Tiffany, of Farmerville; J. Wayne Williams and wife, Christina, of West Monroe; Kristy Michelle Smith, of Farmerville; Daniel A. Smith of Lafayette; Jonathan G. Smith of West Monroe; Joseph B. Smith and wife, Mandi, of West Monroe; Brandi Smith Mashaw and husband, Marc of Farmerville; Jennifer Smith Williams and husband Wayne, of Farmerville; Leslie Jayne Smith, of Farmerville; Janelle Burford Snelling and husband, George, IV, of Monroe; Chad Kenneth Burford and wife Morgan, of Farmerville; and twenty-one great grandchildren. Other survivors include one sister, Lucille Dawson, of Iowa, Louisiana; two sisters-in-law Martha McCrary, Rodessa, and Francis Smith, of Dubach, LA; one brother-in-law Guy A Parsons, of Brookhaven, MS, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Smith proudly served his country during World War II, Battle of the Bulge, 106th Infantry Division, having been awarded a Bronze Star Medal for combat bravery. He was ordained by Antioch Baptist Church as a Deacon in August, 1946, where he actively served until his death. Memberships include Gideons International, Farmerville Lions Club, Past Master of Union Farternal Lodge #53, 32nd Degree Mason, Past Patron Order of Eastern Star #207, American Legion Post #149 V.F.W. and Woodman of the World.
Smith represented Union and Morehouse parishes in the Louisiana Legislature, was employed as Sergeant at Arms in the State Senate, and retired with more than thirty-three years of cumulative service to the State of Louisiana.
Special interests, projects and accomplishments included volunteering as the primary caretaker for Elgin Spring located on Highway 2 near Farmerville, caretaker for Antioch
Cemetery for sixty years, and obtained and erected a monument on the Albama Landing Road near Dean Communtiy for an "unknown"Civil War Soldier.
Mr. Smith was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed all aspects, especially hunting and fishing. Memorial services were at 3 p.m. on Aug. 16, at Antioch Baptist Church. Officiating was Rev. Don Wright and Rev .Paul Carter.
Pallbearers were grandsons James Bradley Smith Jr. Phillip Smith, Wayne Williams, Daniel A. Smith, Jonathan G. Smith, Joseph B. Smith and Chad K. Burford, George M.
