Monroe Swank was born in Kentucky, Oct. 18, 1812, and died at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Harry Long, in Zuma, March 11, 1900, aged 87 years, 4 mos. and 23 days.

The deceased moved with his parents to Harrison county, Indiana, in 1818, and in 1829, he went to Montgomery county same state. He came to Illinois in 1840, settling in Zuma township and occupying the same farm on which he died.

He was married to Mary Clevenger and to them were born four sons and a daughter, two sons and his wife preceding him to the better land, the latter passing away Dec. 24, 1890--the day she was 70 years of age.

The children who survive him are, his daughter, Sarah, and two sons, Joseph and John. There are also living 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He joined the United Brethren church at Rose Hill in 1859, being a charter member, and giving his services to the Master for more than half a century. The death of Mr. Swank removes the last member of the original settlers of Zuma township. In other words he was the only remaining farmer who in the early days had acquired land from the government.

The funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. N. H. May, on Tuesday and were attended by friends and neighbors who came to pay the last sad rites to one whom they had known and respected for so many years.
