John Polk Deeded the land as a burial ground in 1849 and stipulated that he be buried in the cemetery's center. Records indicate the earliest grave unmarked date to 1837 and belonge to William Hamilton. The earlist marked grave is that of John Polks wife,Elizabeth Allen Polk who died in 1855. John Polk Died in 1886 And his grave is in the center of the cemetery.John "Jackey" Polk was the son of Charles (Civil Charley)Polk, born January 18, 1760, and his mother was Margaret (Baxter) Polk.
His grandfather was Captain John Polk, born in 1739 in Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania and his grandmother was Eleanor (Shelby) Polk.

John married Elizabeth Allen between 1811-1814 in Stewart Co. TN. She was born abt. 1795 in KY.
John and family migrated to San Augustine TX in 1837 along with his father Charles and brother Alfred and sister Cynthia.
