Rev. Watkins married Miss Amanda POLK, a daughter of John Polk(b.1785)(buried, Nacogdoches, TX) of Memphis, Tennessee. They were married at San Augustine, Texas, where the Polk family has been among the most prominent in that section of the state. Mrs. Watkins died at Kemp in 1912 at the age of ninety-two, having survived her husband for many years.

Their children were:
*John Polk Watkins,b. Dec 22, 1840, who belonged to Col. Parsons' Twelfth Texas Cavalry, lived the life as a farmer, and died Jan 27, 1908 at Kemp at the age of sixty-nine;
*Jesse Allen Watkins, b. May 1, 1843 ,who served in the same command with his brother, was a farmer and died 1911,at the age of sixty-eight;
*Richard Overton Watkins Jr.b. Aug 6, 1846., a successful farmer near Kemp, also served with Co. G. 12 TX Cavalry.
*Dr. William A.Watkins, Waxahachie, TX
*Robert S. Watkins, who retired at Waxahachie, Texas
*Judge A. B.Watkins, of Athens, Texas, who was born in 1858.


Amanda Polk was part of twenty-two persons organized to charter the Bethel Presbysterian Church(Memorial Presbyterian Church) in San Augustine, TX, June 1838. It was the first Presbyterian church organized in Texas.
It was noted that she was the daughter of Alfred & Nancy Polk. that was an error, she was the daughter of John & Elizabeth Polk who eventually relocated to Nacogdoches County TX. Alfred Polk and John Polk are brothers.
As you see at the top of this page, Amanda name is missing the letter A on the stone marker.
