Four-year-old Demond and his father had come to Minneapolis (from Chicago) to visit relatives. While in Minneapolis, his father was arrested, and Demond was left with family members.

On February 6, Demond was reported missing by the family, and it was said that he was taken by a close family friend. Four days later, on February 10, police discovered Demond's body in the closet of the home from which he had been reported missing. He had died at the hands of his 37-year-old second-cousin, in whose care he had been trusted while his father was in jail.

Demond has been described as a sweet, quiet boy who loved to play with toy cars and loved the song, "Na Na Na, Goodbye." His paternal grandfather called Demond his 'traveling buddy'.

Hundreds of people, including Minneapolis Mayor Rybak and US State Representative Ellison, turned out for Demond's funeral at Shiloh Temple in Minneapolis. He was buried in a T-shirt emblazoned with a helicopter and the word "Rescue", under his burial suit.
