Julian C. Smith, vice president of Encyclopedia Britannica, died of a blood disorder on Wednesday, April 1, 1987, at Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto. He was 59.
Mr. Smith, a resident of Atherton, had served as a vice president and San Francisco division manager of the Chicago-based publisher since 1961. A native of Salt Lake City, he worked as a division manager for the company in Atlanta and Denver before moving to San Francisco.
He is survived by his wife, Rita, and four sons, Bryan, Marc, Monte and Michael.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Tinney & Roller & Hapgood Funeral Home, 980 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. A memorial service will be held at noon on Monday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 1105 Valparaiso Avenue, Menlo Park.
