Devoted 1st wife of John Alvis Slaven. Beloved daughter of Ewell W. Smith and Lovaney Marcum Smith. Loving mother to Ewell, Ora, Florence, Mitchell, Letha, Quince, Bill, Francis, Herbert Luther, Arthur and 2-3 other children that were either stillborn or died in infancy.

Grandmother to all of the generations that follow her.
We were told by a distant cousin that several years ago, when his grandfather, (one of Matilida's sons), went to her grave to pay his respects, (there was only a fieldstone marking her grave), his grandfather went straight to the grave and broke down crying. A few years later, after the death of his grandfather, when this same cousin returned with his father, they could not find the fieldstone.

3/16/2014 Update: I was originally told Matilda died on the 24th of August in Scott Co., TN. I found her death certificate today, and it indicates she died on the 17th of Aug 1913, near Pine Knot, Kentucky in McCreary County. I have changed her death date and place of death to match the death certificate.
