"Body Of Man Is Found In River" April 21, 1937. John Alvis Slaven Found Drowned After Having Been Lost 16 Days.

The body of John Alvis Slaven, 69, farmer, was recovered from the Cumberland River near the mouth of Alum Creek Saturday morning after he had been missing for sixteen days. Unsuccessful attempts had been made to drag the river after his disappearance on his way home from Whitley City.

Mr. Edgar Phillips who was out hunting his sheep, found the body, which was on the far side of the river a short distance from land. A fishing party composed of Mr. and Mrs. John Bryant and Mr. and Mrs. Lester Cooper arrived at the river and heard Mr. Phillips' cries for help. They quickly summoned the coroner, who held an inquest at the river. The coroner's jury gave a verdict of accidental drowning.

Mr. Slaven who lived between Yamacraw and Alum Creek, was last seen by a group of W.P.A. workers on the Alum Creek road. He was en route home at the time and told his son, who was one of the workers, that he was not feeling well and was going home. When informed that the boats were on the opposite side of the river he said he would wade the river. That was the last seen of him and relatives were sure that he had drowned while attempting to cross the river.

Mr. Slaven is survived by his widow and fifteen children, six of whom reside at home. Burial was held Sunday morning.
