Laura Hanlon was born in Otago, New Zealand in 1875. She was the daughter of Irish settlers William D. Hanlon, a policeman and later Justice of the Peace, and his wife Elizabeth Louisa Bingham.

She studied acting in New Zealand before emigrating to Australia. Using the stage name Loris Bingham she found considerable success in Australia.

She was married in 1906 in Dubbo, New South Wales to Robert H. Whitworth, her leading man in the theatre group. During pregnancy and while their two children were young, she did not stop work but turned her hand to backstage work and theatre production, something of a rarity at the time. The marriage failed spectacularly when Robert had a well-publicised affair with another leading lady. Loris' divorce was splashed across the papers and Robert's own brother testified against him, allowing Loris to bring that chapter of her life to a speedy close. She lived the rest of her life a single lady, raising their two children, Lorna and Barry.

It was in the latter part of her career that she found the most success: as a voice actor on the huge radio hit "Dad and Dave." She also introduced her daughter Lorna to the show who would eventually become chief writer, producer and a leading character on the show.

Loris died in Waitara in a private hospital near her home in Thornleigh, in the suburbs of Sydney.
