Richard Douglas Hanlon was the second of eight children born to William and Eliza Hanlon. He was born in 1862 in Queenscliff, Australia but grew up in Otago, New Zealand.

He was a chemist by profession - first in Otago and later in Wellington. He became renowned in his profession and later also for his work as a justice of the peace.

On 05 Nov 1900 Richard married Iva Sophia Curtis in Wellington. It was a society affair, reported in the local and national papers with a photo reportage back in Otago. They had one daughter, Nora Bingham Hanlon, born in 1902.

He ran his own chemists at Molesworth Street, Wellington for 25 years, was the president of the Central Pharmaceutical Association of Wellington and a member of the Pharmacy Board of New Zealand. He was also president of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Justices' Association and founder member of the Commercial Travellers' Association.

Richard Douglas Hanlon died suddenly at the age of 63 on 10 Nov 1925 at his home at 32 Sydney Street, Wellington. Some obituaries incorrectly gave his age as 65. His wife Iva survived him by 26 years.
