Per was working aboard the DS Vesteraalen, a Norwegian combined passenger and cargo liner. On October 17, 1941, the ship was on her way north from Tromsø when it was torpedoed by a Russian submarine. The ship broke in half and sunk in 30 seconds. Seven passengers managed to survive, but 53 people drowned in the disaster.

Per was killed in the sinking.
