Served as Principal Musician, Field and Staff, 123rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry
Enlisted 22 Aug 1862; discharged 12 Jun 1865.

Dennis was a son of Charlotte (King) Canfield.

Dennis enlisted as a fifer in Co. C of the 123rd O.V.I. and was one of the guards of Belle Boyd, the Confederate spy. The story about this guard duty is "that Belle Boyd appreciated his consideration, and thanked him prettily and profusely when he did not insist on standing by her during her visits to the the 1864 (circa) equivalent of the Powder Room. Dennis had been ordered not to let her out of his sight, regardless. Belle answered nature's demands in privacy as far as Dennis was concerned.

He was a husband of Maryette (White) and Catherine (Sly) (Catherine was a Sax-Fox Indian of the Algonquin tribe. She was also the niece of the Catherine (Sly) who was the third wife of Dennis Canfield's father, Jared Canfield.).

Their children were Mary, Cora, Frances, Clark, Ralph, Charles, Korah, and Mary Sophia.

Catherine told him that if he left with young children and an unfinished house, she wouldn't write to him once, and she didn't.
