Lafayette was a carpenter and joiner in a shipyard in 1850, when he was with his brothers, Allen and Silas, in Erie County, Ohio. His parents, Jared and Phoebe Dart Canfield, were from Vermont. LaFayette's father was married three times. His first wife was Sarah King, Phoebe Dart was Jared's second wife, and his third wife was Catherine Sly. LaFayette had siblings: Charlotte, Chloe, Allen, Roswell, Silas, and Noble. He had half-siblings: Dennis, Sarah, Phoebe, Mahala, Henry, Amon, Roselia, Laura, and Oscar. Lafayette married Annis McIntyre on 12 December 1850 in Erie County, Ohio., and they had John McIntyre, Anson L., Julia, Llewellyn Leonard, Dwight Reuben, and Allen C. Following her death in 1889, he married Fanny Stockwell on 21 March 1893 in Wood County. LaFayette died from typhoid fever at the age of 12 days past his seventy-sixth birthday.
