He was born in Homerville, but he lived most of his life in Waycross. Mr. Strickland was proud to have attended Wacona School where he played all sports including basketball and baseball. He served in the United States Army where he was stationed in Mexico and Alaska. Mr. Strickland owned and operated Strick's Auto Repair for many years, and retired from Ware State Prison in 1998.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Samuel Strickland and Gladys Lucille Strickland; and three sisters, Iva Jean Ross, Betty Sue Temple and Janice Holter; and one great grandchild, Alexis Spence.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Frances Pittman Strickland of Waycross; five children, Sharon Ann Clark of Waycross, Kevin "Bubba" Strickland (Pamela) of Waycross, Tina Marie Barnett (Hal) of Waycross, Jerry Ronald Strickland (David) of Atlanta and Mary King (David) of Waycross; 11 grandchildren, Shannon Clark (Chris Jenkins), Stacey Wilson (Tim), Daryl Clark, Tanya Bowen, Harley Brown, Blake Proulx (Derik), John Hal Barnett, Ronald Lee Strickland, Charles King (Cassie), Emily King and Ward Jenkins; 11 great grandchildren; three sisters, Kay Martin (Dennis) of Waycross, Beverly Ray Kunkel (Paul) of Townsend, Sandra Gay McCoy (Sonny) of Kentucky, and James Sammy Strickland (Darlene) of Blackshear; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorialization is by cremation.
