On the morning of August 6, 1945, Kimiko and her big brother Hideaki said goodbye to their family and headed off to school. At 8:15 a.m., the Allied powers dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Hideaki and Kimiko were directly exposed to the blast at their elementary school, and both suffered intense burns. Hideaki carried Kimiko on his back for two kilometers, until they reached a relief station. Hideaki promised to come back for Kimiko and made the journey home. Tragically, neither child survived - Kimiko died at the relief station of her burns, and Hideaki died several days after reaching home of a high fever and blood loss.
The entire Suzuki family was wiped out during the bombing of Hiroshima. The father, Rokuro, died at a relief station of severe injuries. The two youngest children, Mamoru and Akiko, were found skeletonized at a burnt-out barber shop. The mother, Fujie, was the sole survivor - but when she learned that none of her children had survived, she threw herself into a well.
