Jannie was born on January 18, 1927, the eleventh child of John and Annie Petty, in Waverly, Missouri. She lost both parents at an early age, her mother when she was four, and her father when she was seven. She moved to Oklahoma to live with an aunt and uncle, Sherman and Pauline, before moving to Idaho.
On November 2, 1948 Jannie married Ivan Cunningham and together had four children, two of which (Ivan and Thomas aka Tom) preceded her in death.
Ivan passed away in May 1977. Then in March 1978, she married Ivan's brother John Cunningham. He passed away in January 1981. Jannie moved to Buhl in 2000 then to Jerome in 2017 to live with her daughter.
