JOHN ALLEN DEAD

Pioneer Passes Away After Lingering Illness.

John M. Allen, 64 years old, died yesterday afternoon at 2:30 at his home, 229 North Topeka avenue. He has been a sufferer for more than a year from an injury to his spine that has confined him to his home since the beginning of the year. It was the result of this injury that caused his death.

The injury from which Mr. Allen died was occasioned by a fall in August of last year. He was not wholly incapacitated by the fall, but he never fully recovered from its effects, but rather gradually grew worse till the end. He was not confined to his bed until about four month ago, but since then he has been a great sufferer, and claimed death as a relief.

Mr. Allen was a native of Indiana, and was one of the pioneers of this county, having come here in 1871, before this city was reaced by railway. He engaged in the grocery business till about 1888, built up a large trade and was prominently identified with the business interests of the city during all the years of his residence. Since going out of the grocery business he was occupied with various enterprises. He engaged in the real estate business for a number of years, served one term as county commissioner and held office in the gift of the city. For six years he has been connected with the coal firm of Howe & Allen as senior partner.

He was married in 1876 to Miss Martha Lybrook of Fairhaven, O. The wife and four children, one son, Cecil, and three daughters, Jessie, Nina and Glenna, survive him. All live at the home on North Topeka avenue, and were with him at the end. He has two brothers living, Hugh Allen of Hagerstown, and James Allen of Kitchel, Ind. They have been notified of the death, and will probably be here to attend the funeral. A cousin, Mrs. Alice Edgworth, of Richmond, Ind., was the only relative outside the immediate family circle who was with him at the time of his death.

Mr. Allen was a deacon in the First Presbyterian church, and was a member of several fraternal orders, among which are the Knights of Pythias and Odd Fellows. Having served in the union army during the war of the rebellion, he was a member of one of the local G. A. R. posts. The funeral hour has not been fixed.
