Albert Winfield Philips was born June 30, 1854 in Antioch, Monroe, Ohio and died Nov. 5, 1914, after a long illness of Brights disease, at his home near Elk, Kansas, a little over sixty years of age.
Funeral services were held from his home Saturday, conducted by Rev. I.A. Wilson.
Interment was made in the Elk Cemetery
He married Alice Harper March 14, 1880 in
Americus, KS. and seven children were born
to them, all living.
They are Lemuel Philips, Nellie Whitford, Maggie Hodges, Violet Payne, Bertha Venso, Owen and Roy Philips.
Winfield was one of the early settlers, coming to Kansas when a young boy. He took a homestead in 1875, which has been his home since and where he and Alice have worked, planned, built and conquered. Here he took the raw pairie and converted it into an attractive home. Here he built the first small home of rock and here he brought his bride.
Here the children came to brighten their home and here he answered the final call.
His great delight was to surround his home with fine orchards, trees, flowers and shrubs. He kept himself busy with pruning hook and grafting knife.
He had many acquaintances and enjoyed a hearty fellowship with his neighbors. His hospitality was unbounding and never failing. He loved music and ever so happy when family and friends would come for an evening of song and music.
The hand of affliction has been laid very heavily on this home, not with one stroke, but with that slow grinding torture of suffering which has lasted two long years.
The family has passed through a fiery trial and have come out pure gold.
All sacrifice was willingly given to the father and husband.
"Renew my will from day to day
Bind it with thine and take away
All that make it hard to say
Thy will be done"
