The two exchanged letters and eventually were wed in Montesano, Washington on June 4, 1926. They returned to Kansas to live in Peck in a house owned by Mary's aunt and uncle, Rose Bishop Duval and Bertram Clarence Duval. In exchange, John and Mary cared for Mary's grandmother Amanda King Bishop.
