Died Wednesday, June 15, 1994 at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Jackson, Miss. He was 74, a native of Duncan, Miss. and resident of Liberty, Miss., for 25 years. He was a retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. and a retired St. Regis Paper Co. surveyor.

Visiting at Brown Funeral Home, Gloster, Miss., 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, and 8:30 a.m. until religious services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. Joe Felder. interment in Roseland Cemetery, Gloster.

Survived by wife, Neta B. Bateman,Liberty; a son, Hugh E. Bateman, Gloster; a daughter, Mrs. Linda Mae Clack, Pearl, Miss.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Catherine Umbrello, Liberty; two stepsons, James H. Sterling, Liberty and Louis L. Sterling, Metairie; three brothers, Mozell Bateman, Gloster, Linus Batemen, Gloster and Excell Batemen, Natchez, Miss.; a sister, Mrs. Ottrice Holland, Zachary; five grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by parents, Gladys Timms and Robert Huey Bateman.

He was quarter-master of V.F.W. Post No. 6463, Crosby, Miss., life member of the D.A.V., life member of X-P.O.W.'s, member of American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor and member of 27th Bomb Gp., 17th Bomb Sq. He was captured on Bataan in the Philippine Islands during World War II and spent 41 months as a P.O.W. in Japan.
