Ruth was the second child of George Henry Kittell and Kate Fisher Kittell. She grew up in McPherson, Kansas and Canyon City, Colorado. She attended Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kansas. In 1924 she married Glenn Ewing Findley in Manhattan, Kansas. They lived in Dallas, Texas and raised three sons. After her husband Glenn Findley's death she married Rex Redman.
