.. John enrolled in Masterton Mounted Rifles on 20 April 1901 and during the South African War he served as a Lieutenant with the 10th NZ North Island Contingent. After service in South Africa he was posted to England and returned to NZ in 1903.
* On 5 March 1903 he joined the Masterton Mounted Rifle Volunteers and on 19 Sep 1903 he was awarded the New Zealand Territorial Medal.
* He was promoted to Captain on 4 March 1908 and on 20 Dec 1912 he transferred to Reserve of Officers.
* When he attested in the NZEF on 27 Feb 1917 he declared that he was single and that his parents were both deceased. He was 5' 10½" tall. His sister Margaret McKillop of 'Goodlands' Masterton was his next of kin.
* On 31 Dec 1917 he was the Officer Commanding troops on board His Majesty's New Zealand Transport (HMNZT) Ship No. 99 Athenic which sailed from Wellington to Glasgow. His sister Margaret McKillop (1878-1956) was his next-of-kin, 'Goodlands', Te Ore Ore, Masterton. The ship arrived in Glasgow 25 Feb 1918 and Captain McKillop was appointed to the NZ Rifle Brigade.
* He went from England to the Western Front with reinforcement troops on 1 May 1918 and in Aug 1918 he sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. He returned to England on 27 Nov 1918 and was pronounced to be no longer fit for active service.
* On 6 Feb 1919 he was awarded the New Zealand Long and Efficient Service Medal.
John married Ethel Constance McKillop (nee Alderdice), daughter of William Walter Alderdice & Maggie Hester Sinclair, in St Martin, London in 1919.
* He left England for NZ on 17 June 1919 and was struck off strength of the NZEF on 20 Aug 1919.
* He died in New Zealand on 24 July 1920. His scroll and plaque were sent to his widow in Ireland.
After his death Ethel returned to Ireland and remarried on 28 Sep 1929 to John Campbell. Ethel was 47 & John was 54

OBITUARY – Miss M. McKILLOP. The funeral took place in Masterton today of Miss Margaret McKillop. Miss McKillop, who died in Wellington, was a daughter of the late Mr Charles McKillop, who took up the property 'Goodlands' in the Wairarapa over 70 years ago. A brother, Captain J. C. McKillop (one of the district's most prominent residents 40 years ago) and a sister, Mrs M. A. Dennis, the only other members of the family of which Miss McKillop was the youngest, pre-deceased her.
Miss McKillop travelled widely and during her lifetime lived for some years in Europe, She was a generous supporter of many charitable causes.
She is survived by her nieces, Mrs Emy Hodgins (Eileen Mary Young nee Dennis) and Mrs E. R.(Edgar Ravenswood) McKillop (Marguerita Anne Mary nee Dennis), of Wellington.
Messrs E. R. McKillop, O. Hodgins, J. Gray, G. Wagg, R. E. Hodgins and A. Keith acted as pallbearers at the funeral service in St Patrick's Church and at the Masterton Cemetery. Mass was celebrated before the service.
