McKILLOP
- On July 30th, at the Private Hospital, Brougham-street, Wellington, Charles McKillop, of "Goodlands," Masterton, aged 72.

The death occured early this morning of Mr Charles McKillop, a well-known settler of "Goodlands" near Masterton. The deceased passed away in a private hospital in Wellington in his seventy-second year, at an early hour this morning. The late Mr McKillop took ill abour three months back and his condition becoming serious, he went to Wellington a fortnight ago to seek the very best advice. It was found that he was suffering from a distressful disease, from which there was little hope of his recovery and he gradually sank and expired as above. The late Mr McKillop who was a native of Ballycastle, County Antrim, Ireland, arrived in Melbourne, Victoria in 1863. He then followed the gold rush to the West Coast the following year. Mr McKillop went to Masterton in 1866 but returned to Victoria for seven years, where he married and followed farming pursuits for a time. Mr McKillop then went back to Masterton in the 'seventies and has been farming there ever since.

He was one of the pioneer waggoners of the Wairarapa. In the 'sixties he drove a waggon over the Rimutaka for the late Mr Henry Bannister. Those were strenuous days and many exciting experiences were encountered in negotiating the hill and the bridgeless rivers of the valley.
Mr McKillop was an honest, straight-forward man, of charitable disposition and was an excellent settler. His death will be regretted by a host of friends. He leaves a widow, one son (Mr J. C. McKillop of Puketiri), Masterton and two daughters, who will have the sympathy of the whole community in their sad bereavement. The remains of the deceased are to be brought to Masterton for interment.

The high esteem in which the late Mr Charles McKillop was held was evidenced by the large and representative cortege at his funeral yesterday afternoon, settlers being present from all over the Wellington province to pay a last mark of respect to one held so high in esteem. The ceremony at the graveside was performed by the Rev Father Harnett.
