Charles Dexter Kates (also Cates, Cate) was an 18-year-old carpenter residing at Brookline, MA when he enlisted as a private on May 23, 1861. He was mustered into Company A, 1st Massachusetts Infantry, later that same day. Private Cates was wounded in action at Nelson's Farm, VA on June 30, 1862, and hospitalized for several months. He was discharged for wounds at Philadelphia, PA on October 23, 1862. After the war he married (1) Mary E. Puffer at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, on Feb. 19, 1865. She was the daughter of Jacob Puffer & Mary Door. He later married (2) Rubie A. Hunt at Strong, Franklin County, Maine, on Jan. 30, 1867. Charles then married (3) Henrietta "Jennie" Wilson at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine, on Nov. 11, 1872.
