Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.

Dirk J. Bode was born 8 October 1848 (tombstone date is incorrect) in Ostfriesland, probably Uphusen to Jan Middents Cornelius Bode (1807-1865) and Antje Gerjets Eckhoff (1811-1863). He was the 6th child of seven born to the couple.

He immigrated with his parents and siblings, landing at NYC harbor on 2 Jun 1854 before probably proceeding to New Orleans and up the Mississippi, eventually establishing residence in Ridott Township in Stephenson County, IL.

In 1870 at age 22, he lived with his brother, Cornelius Bode and his family. Approximately 1872, he was an "inmate" of the Insane Asylum, Jacksonville, IL. On 25 May 1875, he was transferred to Elgin Asylum for the Insane in Elgin, IL, where he lived until after 1900. In 1902, the State Hospital for the Incurable Insane was opened in Peoria, IL. It is not known when Dirk moved to the State Hospital; however, by the time of his death on 4 July 1905, he was an "inmate" at Peoria and is buried there.

The nature of his affliction was described as "chronic maniac." An older brother was labeled "idiotic" but lived with his sister Moderina and her family his whole life. Other members of his family became highly educated pastors and scientists, speaking to the narrow gap between mental confusion and genius.

sources include: Westerhusen parish records (christening); NYC passenger lists; "up the Mississippi" is family lore; 1870 US census, Ridott; 1880 DDD schedule for Elgin, Kane County IL; Dirk Jans Bode probate record, Stephenson County, IL; Garriet Bode lived with his sister and appears in various US censuses including Wright County, IA.
