On 16 April 1836 he married Antje Gergerts Eckhoff in Wolthusen. Six of their seven children were born in the Uphusen area.
On 2 June 1854 the family landed dockside in NYC and began the trek to IL through New Orleans and up the Mississippi. The family immediately purchased farmland in the German Valley area of Stephenson County IL and was instrumental in the establishment of this Ostfriesen colony in that area.
Jan Middents Cornelius Bode died 30 September 1865.
"We regret to learn that Mr. John Bode, a resident of the town of Ridott, in this county, met with his death on Monday last by being caught in the tumbling rod of a threshing machine. He was so seriously injured that he only lived four hours after the accident." from the Freeport Journal, November 4, 1868.
While it has not been confirmed, it is assumed that Antje Gerjets (nee Eckhoff) Bode is also buried in this cemetery.
