Illegitimate daughter of King Pedro II of Portugal and Maria da Cruz Mascarenhas, a sweeper and maid of the Palace Chamber, who later became a nun in the Convent of Santa Mónica. She was raised by her half-aunt Maria of Braganza, a Carmelite nun of the Convent of Santa Teresa de Jesus, in Carnide, also herself an illegitimate daughter of King João IV, Louisa's grandfather. She married twice but had no children. She was also the 2nd and 3rd Duchess of Cadaval, 5th Marchioness of Ferreira and 6th Countess of Tentúgal by marriage.
